Colour and thickness are visible choices, but substrate condition influences the outcome from the beginning. Concrete that looks clean may still contain contamination, a weak surface or incompatible moisture conditions.
Inspect before selecting materials
Review old coverings, oil, cracks, joints and surface strength. Identify repairs and loose material. Diagnose unclear damage before covering it.
Specify preparation
Mechanical preparation may be needed according to the slab and coating. Remove residues and contaminants after preparation. Do not apply one texture or method to every system; follow its requirements.
Review moisture and conditions
Assessment methods and limits depend on product data. Do not transfer a moisture threshold from one material to another or assume a primer solves every issue.
Repair and prime
Use compatible repairs and primer, observing application and recoat requirements. Preserve movement-joint functions rather than coating over them indiscriminately.
Request a clear scope
Define stripping, preparation, repairs, checks, materials and sequence. Ask how the substrate will be reviewed before coating and what may require a scope change.
